Since May 2018, Studio Doozy’s Team has been volunteering with Happy Grannies, visiting and taking care of elderly living alone in Hong Kong public estates. Thanks to many social workers and non-profit organizations like Happy Grannies, these elderly get to live better lives.
Ageing is itself a tough process in our lives. Biological changes both in the shape of physical and mental degradation have a direct effect on our quality of living but for many, their low economic power, lack of family members and loneliness make life even harder.
Hong Kong does provide several resources in the shape of social services and benefits for the elderly, allowing the elderly to apply for schemes that supply them with monetary help among others. Besides the government, multiple NGO’s provide caring services targeted for the elderly and it is thanks to the multiple unorganized organizations that many are taken care of.
Despite the acceptable current state of the caring system for the elderly in need, we believe there is still room for improvement. We believe public estates should find ways to better target and take care of the elderly living alone or in need. Perhaps, a combination of a subjective and objective caring system integrated with technology could help us better keep track of the emotional and physical state of our elderly at the same time that would allow us to optimize activities and services targeted to them with the main and ultimate objective to increase their quality of living.
