Gense Mobile is a portable medical imaging device designed to seamlessly live within our homes. Their award-winning imaging technology generates cross-sectional images, waveforms, and indicators which can serve as an affordable medical diagnostic screening tool and a continuous monitoring device for patients at home.

The device comes along with a flexible band with an array of electrodes that wraps around the patients' chest.  The patients can use their phones to connect to the device and access all their information as well as run diagnosis tests.

Despite lung imaging currently being their main focus, their technology will serve to diagnose multiple parts of our bodies, from ankles, knees, or wrists, ideal for people recovering from injuries or to unintrusively evaluate degradation of any tissue or tendons in our body.

Product Design

The top of the device sports a slanted surface that helps to perceive the device as smaller. As the top surface approaches the bottom of the device it curves to merge with the bottom and side frame. The device's ports are semi-hidden at the bottom back of the device thanks to the angled frame that wraps around the back and sides of the device.

The low weight and ease of portability, also help make the Gense Mobile a  fantastic solution for self-administered diagnosis.

Initial Concepts

As part of our design process, we started the development of the product by exploring shapes and forms based on the client's brief and objectives.

At this point, we tend to focus on the main lines of the device already considering the size of the internal components.

Several concepts were presented to the client to further discuss and understand their preferences.

Design Direction

The design language we ended up developing takes from the shapes we designed for the Gense Imaging device (the standalone version).

With simplicity in mind and with the goal to create a new association of how medical devices should look like in the future, we combined modern materials found in consumer electronics with straight and rounded surfaces that look familiar yet modern.

Design Engineering

Besides the purely aesthetic aspect of the device, we also took care of the design engineering. This process consisted of designing the supports that hold all the components in place and optimizing the assembly of the device for production.

Structural integrity was also considered to guarantee the resistance and durability of the device.

Prototyping

Throughout the development process, several prototypes were created for testing purposes. These prototypes have different levels of fidelity according to their purpose, from shape assessment prototypes, assembly tests, and material testing, these prototypes help us make sure all the aspects are considered before manufacturing.
